For your cow put the Dean and Obeplorand Late witereained the project of altering and improving the seating and: panelling in the oboir of the Outhedrd. The shoir stalls and panelling are of the time of Charles II. sud on the removal of portion of this wainscoting there was found consoaled behind a row of stono atalia, with overhanging ornamental innopies, and that the back of the aaste was decorated with a beautifal broad bund of green sprinkled with gold stara... Da a further removal of} atolls, the old Norman stone sexis wore more. distinctly seen and although only a small): portion of woodwork was taken down, ṇhough was laid bare to satisfy the architect that some very interesting ancient workmanship had been hidden behind and under the modern out Sitting that fill the whole length of the choir. It is supposed that some of the stones which formed the seats have been moved to servo da founda- "tions fü other and liter parts of the structure. This interesting work is pronounced to be of the end of 18th century.

It is not often that the coroner's jury on deathe resulting from an explosion of goapow der have such clear and a questionable ovidonda of the onnan of the explosion laid before thom afia the osse of the Regent's Park calaatrophe. aid half tons of gunpowder, and with other Invite an Inspection of goods, including some cake of benzoline spirit. The evilence of Mr. Kcates and Professor Tay Jor olorly establisbes the fact that this aprit is very volatile at ordinary tan peratures, that the gas so givào off in vely infummuble, and, when mixed with about eight or tan parts of air, forms a highly explosive mixture: if sup. plied with a larger proportion of air, it will not explude any burn with a blue fure. The mon on board the other burges—or at least three of thom-diatinetly state that there was a mail explosivu and flush on board the Tilbury pre- vions to the fatal explosion: ose of them, in his own pecaliur language, described this sea
blus busticle." After the blus Hamo end-to minor report were observed enficient time. elapsed for word to be passed to the steam-tug to sachen speed, and to go on again; then came the explosion of the gunpowder. Now supposing, that there was a slight leakage of beazoline from the casks on board the Tilbury,. the gra thus liberated, being fined by the Karpaulin dovering, could only mingla with the small gunatity of air among the interstices of the curge, until it found its way to the air-bola in the Bulkhead leading into the bin at the atern. Here it would meet with moro air, and, being thus farther diluted, would form an in flammable and not a troly explosive mixzare, This mixture, aming in contact with the sme of either the fire or the lamp (both of which ware proved to be lighted), would take fire; and the fae would, no Mr. Koates and Profcesor Taylor stated, ba commantented, into the hold throught the airhole, and than be carried forward nwong this powder. That this was the manner in which fire was carried to the powder.. was es- Laulished by the evidence of Major Mejandio, the Government Inspector of Gunpowder Werka. He produced before the jury a model of the harge to souls, about four feet long, which differed from the barge that blew up only in having, for convenience, a tin cover over the bold instead of pieces of tarpaulíu, and in aot basag sowed with models of the carge. In the front part of the hold of this model was poured small graitily of identically the same benzo line that formed part of the cargo in question, The cover was then pat on, and in about ten ingles a light was introduced into the sabin, The vapour of benzoline in the cabin at page took flie, flushed through the air-hole in the balk-bead, od exploded that in the bold, blowing off the dover, Thaw, wasoming the pruevice of benzoine vapour caused by leukuga from the casks; the accident is at ono counted for. That there was leaking there can be very little question; and the spirit is so volatile that ite vypour will make its way through a cork. Special exemption is claimed by the company on their invoices for any loss due to leakage from the onska; and Hajar Majendie a few days after the explosion, ex- amined a cuak on the company's premises which was considered to be quite sound and perfect. from which nevertheless the subetsuce war leaking at the bung-bole. Fieces of sponge with which some of the stuff nozing out was collected wera alterwards proved by experiment to give off an explosive gaz.. All these things being considered, the jury could have dome to no) other concision than that expressed in their vardist.
