"INFERNAL MACHINES. "
(To the Editor of the Pukes.}... Sir-The short paragraph under the above hending, which appeared in The Times of be 9.b July, as taken from the Spectator of the previone Saturday, may prove of far greater importance than would at frst sight seam pro- bable, and its further vantilation may tend to prevent most scrious character.
To be forewarned is to be carmed," and as there are no means an effectaal by which a timely warning may be conveyed to every eur. ner of the habitable world te a letter to The Times, I truas you will allow me to trespasa on your coloane u te interests of humanity, as well as for the possible prication of frand and
wide-spread misery and row.
Inm indreed to take this step from some -cingumstances which hova cecily come to my - siwo knowledge in my official empacity as Conal, in London, for the Repslio of Venezuela, which appears to have been fixed on as the aceae of pay of the earliest acts in this hellish plo. Admiral Potiaan, hely French Minister Murine, has thought it of sufficicat importanes to in ciretlar to those whom it may Interest, and singalarly, my littlo his tory starts from one of the principal posts in Trinen.
On the 10th of April a gentleman onlied on meat thig Conabate, saying that be bad some information to import which was of great im- postunee, to Venezuela. My brat inpression was that he had acusa secret fàr which he expect. ed to be paid, but snob did not prove to be the cast, and I hereby tender him my public acknowledgment. -
He told me his story, which appeared to me so singular that. I saked him if he would object. to put the principal facts upon paper, which he kindly dil, and from his sletement I condonee the following.
He stated that a mailing weasel had then left, or was on the eve of leaving, * port iù. France forume of the principal pore in Venezucts, the wane of which he gave "oin, but which for ob- vious reasons I suppress, 66 well as the ancien of the perens mixed up in the transaction. A native of France, but who had been for some years previons to the last 15 or $5 months re- sident in Venerula, was said to base sailed in this vessel, taking with him a supply of thes
infernal machince," expressly alapted to the secret destruction of stownbeijos.
Fortunately, Ireceived this information on the day of the West Indian mai steamer mailing, and I lost no time in sanding full particulars dire to the authorities at the Vervaelen part in greation, and also want the same to the Government at Caracas, 1 ms subsequently shown one of the machines themselves, which exactly corresponds with the description given in the Spectator, being about fín, byʻsin,, with The exact appearance of an ordinary piece of coul I was told that come were made con- siderably larger, oven to the size of a mao's bend, but always to resemble coals, the rewSÖN of which is obvious..
