ATTACK ON CHESTER CASTLE. A very strange story Xing a correspondent of the Liverpool Marcurs at present rife in Chester concerning the autecedents of General Olasoret, who has occupied such a conspicuous position in connection with recent disastrous erenta in Paris, It had now transpired that this notorious Communist planned the attack on the Castle of Cheater in 1967, and that be sud M'Auliff, who was arrested on the morning fol- lowing the raid on the castle as one of the princi pal conspirators, are-ding and the same-indi-cent; discount vidal. Au Irishman by birth (and not an American, an has been stated), it appears, a cording to his own statement while in gaol, fa Chester, that he was educated to be a priest, but bis restless and roving spirit prevented the consummation of the wishes of his frisude, and when the Garibaldian disturbance took place in Italy he joined, like many more of his country- men, the Pope's brigado, in the service of dietidation Ed which be achieved "some was wornded. He afterwards returned to England and came to Chester, where. he delivered a lesture on "The Wrongs of Irishmen. Being then a Foniun in authority," he traversed the coustics of Stafford and Lancaster with a view of furthering the cuese, and then planus the attack on Ghoster Castle, which ended ea ingloriously for thos who participated in it. M'Auliff was one of those who were ariesfod, and, after having heen detained in custody for soms time, was at length liberated. He was preaaut at the mur der of Sergent Brest. at Manchester, shortly after which he made overtures to the Goroca ment with a view.of giving information against those whose cause he had previously supported and advanced, This, however, becoming known to bin seaociates in Fontanism, be wa at once * marked ax, and had to fly to France for safely, taking refuga as a lay brother in a reli- gion community. Hare un compiled an ae count of the raid on Choster Castle, in the course of which he varrates how he effected an entrance to the armonzy of the castle, and enw 130,000 stand of arms stored thero, and. 80- tually fitted on one of the picces of armour kept as a rolio there.

THE AGE AND PHYSIQUE OF A SOLDIER We are glad to find (says the Zancel) that s matter to which we have more than once ad- verted has at length attracted the nation of a great military authority. Lord Sandhural, in a very effective and statesmanlike speech, re." cantly called the attention of the Upper Hous to the ages of our recruits and of the en form- ing our standing army in connection with the eubject of the formation of an army reserve,
