Silk haring been carefully sorted in the country by the dealers, previous to its being brought down bore, every bandle of it should have a chop attached to it, written in Japanese and English_charao- ters, stating the name of the producer or the dealer, and also the province, town or loyalty it comes from. The way in which silk is made up is an- important, and may be varied in all the provinces, provided the following recom- mendations be strictly albeaded to:
1st.Silk should be made up in such a way as to allow the interior to be freely ex- Gmined. The practice of tying up silkin tight bundles as it used to be formerly in Ida Siocbiu, and as it is to this day in Mino, is very much to ha reprored. The buyer cannot inpect the silk thoroughly without cutting up the tios; and whilst anxious not to spoil the, appearance of it, be falls into the danger of overlooking the inferior portion with which the seller is templed to still the silk offered for sale.
The best way to make up silk is that which enables the buyer to inspect it thoroughly, without in the lost in- juring it appearance. Againat mak ing up in lanka, or in pose, bandles, as in Jonhiu, Siuchiu, Oskiu. Totobizen, and elsaubere, no objection can be raised. The way in which Tazima silk is made up, would be the best of all, as it is the near- est approximation to the Italian and French fashions; but in that case no-paper ties of any kind ought to be put inside the skeins; onu chop alone to ench bundle would be sufficient.
BadThe tire or strings ought to be anilorm in weight, size, and nature, throughout Japan; bitherto they have been a universal sonroe of complaint and divantisfaction. They are. not only dis similar in size, weight, and nature, from „provincé, to province, town to town, and focality to locality, but they even vary from bala to bale, and bandle to bandle so that it may be truly said that they were merely introduced by the native truders with a view to deceive and defrand the buyers. It is perfectly well known that, with the exception of strings the papers with which the '-bank wilka ar tied up, are of hò nun, whạt-
