HE Provisional Comunittre for promoting the ercetion of n City Hall in Hongkong, desire to report the progress that has been made, up to the close of the present pear, in furthering the oljent for which they are associated.
The principal dificulty connected with this nu dertaking has been to procure, a site that should is at ones suitable for the purpose, and in the gift of Government; it being obrians that the present high value of Land within the limits of the City made it impossible that any sum of mo ney, which the Committee could expect to com mind, would prove adequato if ground had to be purchased.
An application for a site at the Western Car ner of the Parade Ground, immediately, undaz Ncaars At Heard & Co.'s Office, was promptly and liberally conceded, but, beiore any formal, grant of the land bad been wado, it was fort nately discovered that difficulties, previously thought.iwaperable, to the conpation of the piece of ground now partially secupied by the Harbour Master's Office, were susceptible of ri
oral and the Committes have the satisfaction of aiming tình recommendation for grant be that site (edocltedly this mest eligible for the purposes of a City Bull in the whole Colony) bás, with the approval of the Military Authorisida, been forwarded by the local Government to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, and that the position of the Drinking Fountain (presented to the Uity by Mr. John Dent, and now in course of erection) has been determined with special r Forence to the dimensions and nation of the proposed Building.
The space which, is is confidently hoped, wit be thus placed at the disposal of the Committee will enable them to embraco in their scheme the following hoogmodation
1. A Poldie Hall, to be called the St. Andrew's Hall, in acknowledgment of a sun of Fire 12- sand Dallara, which has been vored to the under- inking from the surples Funde of the late St. An- drew's School.
