The Canton Races were announced for last Thursday the 7th insinut. There were nino racen in all, which it was arranged should come of all one day, commencing st noon. should state that on this previous evening an Amateur threatrical representation took place. The theatre consisted of the dining and drawing toons of one of the principal firms, which foons were divided by large, folding duns, which formed the proscenium. The band consisted of a piano, a violincello," viulin and a cornet, all played by Amateurs. The faren selected was" I've written to Brown." There were three male characters and two female. The latter made no pretensions, but simply walked and talked through their parts, and had clearly been taken up to oblige their fripuds and not to please themselves. They had not fair play either, for all the ladies in the house were placed in the front row, with in a couple of yards frein the stage, in that whenever the female amateurs" front, they had to withstand the glances and the! tilters of the entire phalanx. Once or twice the gentle performers eaved ju, but the audience" seeing their distress, always tided them over. The men's parts were admirably perforjed the free is a very broad one; all the points but one were hit dead, and it went off with greatspirit, after which the entire corps dra- matique in enstunic, accompanied by a porses, tion of the band, and a part of the audience, adjourned to the library and amused them- selves in drawing swers No.
