The fire broke out on the staircase of the first floor of a building at 6-8 Prat Avenue, Tsim Sha Tsui at 3.59 am and spreaded rapidly to the second to the fourth floors which were occupied by a karaoke club. The blaze was upgraded to No. 3 alarm at 4.07 am.

By using four jets and one hydraulic platform monitor as well as mobilising eight breathing apparatus teams, firemen put out the blaze at 5:22 am. A total of 42 persons who were stranded in the building were rescued by firemen.

Of the rescued, 28 were injured and taken to hospitals where five males and 10 females were certified dead before arrival. The remaining 13 injured persons, aged between 16 and 24, are admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kwong Wah Hospital and Princes Wales Hospital respectively where a 24-year-old man and a 16- year-old girl are in critical condition while the others are either in stable or satisfactory condition.

Initial investigation revealed that the blaze appeared to have been occurred deliberately because it had flared up on the staircase of the first-floor of the building and spreaded rapidly to the upper floors.

Investigation by the police is still underway.

Flushing water cut in Kowloon East

Owing to a suspension of electricity supply to Cha Kwo Ling Salt Water Pumping Station, flushing water supply to some premises in Kowloon East will be suspended from midnight on Monday (January 27) to 6 am the following day.

The suspension will affect premises in Cha Kwo Ling, Lam Tin, Kwun Tong, Ngau Tau Kok, Kowloon Bay, Jordan Valley, Ngau Chi Wan, San Po Kong, Wong Tai Sin and Diamond Hill, including Choi Hung Estate and Ping Shek Estate.
