a death gratuity will be granted to a member who dies as a result of any injury sustained in the discharge of his duty;

in addition to death gratuity, a dependant pension will be paid to the spouse, covering both widows and widowers, and the dependants of a member who dies as a result of any injury sustained in the discharge of his duty;

increases to pensions will be paid in line with those applicable to members of the Civil Service; and

free medical treatment in respect of injuries sustained in the course of duty will be provided to a member who has retired because of that injury.

The Legislative Council Panel on Security was briefed on 28 October 1996 on the proposed legislation, and has not raised any queries. Early enactment of this Bill will be welcomed by members of the Auxiliary Services, who have done and will continue to do so much in support of the overall Government's efforts to maintain order, security and safety of the community. I urge Honourable Members to give this Bill speedy consideration.
