Mr President,
(a)
(b)
The reported incidents refer to the shooting of birds at the northern bank of the Shenzhen River, not in the Mai Po Marshes. We first received such a report on 14 October. A further report was received on 31 October. However, we do not know the number of birds that have been killed.
We are very concerned about the reported shootings. We took up the case with the Chinese authorities through the Border Liaison Channel after receiving the first report. We also provided further information and some photographs to the Chinese side, and urged them to take effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. We understand that a few arrests have been subsequently made by the Shenzhen authorities. Since then, there have been no further reports of these incidents but we will continue to monitor the situation closely.
