Identification of slope maintenance responsibility

The Government has taken a major step in improving slope safety by awarding a $58.4 million consultancy to carry out a systematic identification of slope maintenance responsibility (SIMAR) for up to 50,000 sizeable man-made slopes and retaining walls in the territory.

The consultancy agreement, awarded by the Lands Department, was signed today (Friday) by the Director of Lands, Mr Bob Pope, and a representative of Larry H C Tam and Associates Limited.

Speaking after the signing of the agreement, Mr Pope said the consultant would interpret leases, land documents, prevailing government policies and all available information to determine the party or parties responsible for maintaining each of the slopes or retaining walls as well as his/their respective liability for maintenance.

"The results of the three-year study will be compiled in a database register which will serve as a ready reference for government use.
