The case was heard in the Western Magistracy earlier this month when the dispensary's 65-year-old shop-owner pleaded guilty for possessing controlled medicine without licence. He was fined $150,000. In the second case, AFD officers conducted an operation at a medicinal shop at Un Chau Street and seized a total of 76 packets of medicines claiming to contain tiger or rhino ingredients.

The 75-year-old shop operator was convicted after trial in the North Kowloon Magistracy last week and fined $250,000. Summing up the case, the magistrate also remarked that it was a serious offence.

Mr Cheung believed the heavy fines would serve an effective deterrent for similar offences. He called on members of the public to refrain from buying medicines containing or claiming to contain tiger or rhino ingredients as possession of such medicines without a licence for personal use is already an offence.

He also urged the public to report any illegal activities on endangered species to AFD by calling 2733 2144.

In a related development, Mr Cheung pointed out that Information Services Department had produced for AFD an updated information leaflet entitled "Protect Endangered Species". Copies of the leaflet have been, and are being, distributed to traders, schools and related associations. Any person wishing to obtain a copy can contact the AFD's Fauna Conservation Unit, sixth floor, Canton Road Government Offices, 393 Canton Road, Kowloon.
