The OECD will present a publication entitled Towards Multilateral Investment Rules. The book presents key reports explaining the nature and purpose of the MAI, including background documentation not previously available to the public on: existing liberalisation, new disciplines, investment protection, dispute settlement and non-members and institutional issues. There are also articles by experts inside and outside of the OECD on various aspects of the MAI
The meeting, to be held in the form of workshop discussion, will also address the liberalisation of foreign direct investment and how it will affect recipient economies. The discussion will be based, in particular, on the experiences of Chile, India and Portugal.
More than 100 senior Government officials, academics and other nominees will attend the workshop in their personal capacity.
The Hong Kong contingent will include the Deputy Secretary for Trade and Industry, Mr Francis Ho; the Director-General of Industry, Mrs Regina Ip; the Deputy Director-General of Industry, Ms Anissa Wong; Permanent Representative of Hong Kong to the World Trade Organisation, Mr Stuart Harbinson, and Government Economist, Mr KY Tang.
The Secretary for Trade and Industry, Miss Denise Yue, will officiate at the opening of the workshop.
The Deputy Secretary-General of OECD, Mr Makoto Taniguchi; the Chairman of OECD's Committee on International Investment and Multinational Enterprises (CIME). Ambassador M Baldi (Switzerland); and Deputy Chairman of MAI Negotiating Group, Mr Akitaka Saiki will brief the media at the conclusion of the workshop on Wednesday.
