Primary schools invited to join extensive reading scheme
Primary schools are invited to participate in Phase II of the Hong Kong Extensive Reading Scheme in English in September 1996.
A spokesman for the Education Department said today (Tuesday) that 40 schools would be selected to join the scheme.
"The scheme was first introduced in last September in public sector primary schools and was well received by both teachers and students," the spokesman said.
"At present, 41 schools have taken part in Phrase I of the scheme."
The scheme is a curriculum project for upper primary pupils. It is aimed at helping upper primary students develop a reading habit in English and improving their English proficiency through reading good quality English books.
Through a well organised reading programme, pupils will eventually be able to improve their writing abilities and other skills.
Participating schools will be provided with a complete resource package consisting of one set of 300 books graded into six different levels accompanied by reading and teaching aids.
Specialist support including seminars and induction courses will be offered to schools before implementing the scheme.
