Scholarship for disabled students 1996-97

Disabled students can now apply for fellowship/scholarship for overseas studies in the 1996-97 academic year.

The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council announced today (Friday) that one student would be selected for the award.

The fellowship/scholarship is aimed at encouraging disabled student who has attained a reasonably high standard of scholastic achievements to pursue further education in a reputable institution overseas.

The fellowship is for studies leading to a postgraduate degree either by research or by coursework; the scholarship is for undergraduate studies leading to a first degree.

The successful candidate for the award is expected to demonstrate his/her ability to maintain health of body and of mind, to adapt to new environment and to be a good example to other disabled persons. He/she is required to serve in Hong Kong for at least three years upon graduation.

The applicants will be responsible for fulfilling all application procedures and admission requirements of the academic institution of his/her choice, and be offered a place subsequently.

The value of the fellowship is about $208,000 per year for up to three years for Doctoral degree or two years for Master degree; the value of the scholarship is about $190,000 per year for up to three years.

In addition, a special one-off grant may also be given for the purchase of study aids or acquisition of supportive services depending on the merits of the case.
