"Between 1992 and 1994, field tests were carried out in Tsuen Wan, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui to test four types of electronic parking devices," Dr Lee said.
He said these devices included one PDM, and three types of EPM operated by electronic keys, magnetic cards and chip cards respectively. Each test lasted for about one year, so as to try out the performance under different weather conditions.
"The trials have been successful, and the overall performance of the new parking devices is considered good in the key aspects like ease of maintenance. revenue protection, enforcement, public acceptance and management information function."
"In view of the successful trials, Transport Department plans to replace all the mechanical parking meters with electronic devices operated by pre-paid parking cards by phases within the next three years.
"Specifications for the new equipment are being drawn up. It is planned to procure the new equipment through public tender," Dr Lee added.
