"Initially, the treated sewage will be discharged into the Rambler Channel through an existing submarine outfall for further dispersion and dilution.

"After completion of the Stage I of the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme in mid-1997, the treated sewage will be connected to the sewer tunnel leading to the sewage treatment works on Stonecutters Island.

"Consequently, the water quality at Rambler Channel will be greatly improved," Mr Ng said.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Director of Territory Development, Mr Lee Shing-see, said construction of the sewage screening plant was a project of the New Town Development Programme.

He revealed that work had already started on another project to upgrade the sewage collection system in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung.

"Part of this will involve the reconstruction and widening of the nearby Wing Shun and Kwai Yue Streets. These works are also being carried out by the Drainage Services Department (DSD) on our behalf," he said.

The Kwai Chung Sewage Screening Plant was constructed by DSD on behalf of the Territory Development Department.
