Vacant premises rate refund to be abolished
Starting from Saturday (July 1), the refund of half the rates paid for vacant non- domestic premises will be abolished when the relevant provisions of the Rating (Amendment) Ordinance 1995 come into effect.
A spokesman for the Rating and Valuation Department said if there are vacant non-domestic premises in new buildings which are newly assessed to rates, ratepayers will be able to claim half refunds for any vacant period prior to July 1.
Full refunds can still be claimed in respect of vacant open land, except where it was previously used for parking of motor vehicles, and also in respect of vacancies resulting from a Government closure order.
Ratepayers of vacant properties in the department's register as at July 1 will be individually notified of the changes. If anyone wishes to have more information, they can contact the department on 2805 7666.
