VM transfer operation tomorrow
A Government spokesman announced today (Friday) that an exercise to transfer 1,500 Vietnamese migrants (VMs) from Section 1 of the Whitehead Detention Centre to High Island would take place tomorrow morning.
"This is part of the Government's plans to push ahead with the closure of detention centres," he said.
The spokesman explained that the intended transfer was announced in Section 1 on May 12. The VMs were asked to come forward for transfer and during the course of the following week intensive counselling was undertaken.
Since then, only 197 VMs have left the section.
"We shall continue our efforts to persuade the VMs to move peacefully and we still hope that many of them will agree to do so," the spokesman said.
The transfer exercise will be observed by independent monitors and UNHCR officials.
