Cathay Pacific's General Manager Airline Services Mr John Seale said the airline was most pleased to play a part in this bear rehabilitation operation by offering free transportation.

Work in confined spaces must be safe

Employers and workers must comply with the safety requirements to ensure work safety in confined spaces, the Deputy Chief Factory Inspector of the Labour Department, Mr Tse Ming-sing, said today.

Referring to an incident in which two workers fell unconscious while working in a drainage manhole at the junction of Tai Hing Tai Road and Kin San Lane in Cheung Chau yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, Mr Tse said the department's factory inspectors are still investigating the case.

"Prosecution will be taken if we have sufficient evidence to suggest that someone should be held responsible," he added.

Mr Tse stressed that most industrial accidents could have been avoided if employers and workers had strictly observed safety regulations.

"Under the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and its subsidiary regulations, employers have the statutory obligation to provide a safe system of work, information on potential hazards, as well as supervision and training to ensure workers' safety.

"The Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Confined Spaces) Regulation states very clearly that employers and employees must take appropriate precautions against dangers resulting from the presence of noxious fumes, toxic gas, oxygen deficiency or excessive heat in confined spaces." Mr Tse added.
