The standards for helmets to be worn by motorcyclists are set out in the Road Traffic (Safety Equipment) Regulations. It is an offence if helmets other than those of an approved type are sold or worn. While the sale of helmets is not specifically monitored by Government, in investigating motor cycle accidents the Police do check whether the helmets worn conform with the approved standard. In the past 3 years, there have been 41 prosecutions for wearing non standard helmets.
