THE CITY AND NEW TERRITORIES ADMINISTRATION (CNTA) HAS URGED ALL OPERATORS OF EXISTING BEDSPACE APARTMENTS ΤΟ APPLY FOR A CERTIFICATE OF EXEMPTION BEFORE THE REGISTRATION PERIOD ENDS IN A MONTH'S TIME.

AN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF CNTA, MR TIM STEPHENSON, SAID OPERATORS WERE REQUIRED TO REGISTER WITH THE OFFICE OF THE LICENSING AUTHORITY (OLA) BEFORE NOVEMBER 30 OR FACE A FINE OR IMPRISONMENT.

HE SAID ANY PERSON WHO OPERATED A BEDSPACE APARTMENT WITHOUT A VALID CERTIFICATE OF EXEMPTION OR A LICENCE WOULD BE LIABLE ON CONVICTION TO A FINE OF $100,000 AND IMPRISONMENT FOR TWO YEARS.

THE PERSON WILL ALSO BE LIABLE TO A FINE OF $20,000 FOR EACH DAY DURING WHICH THE OFFENCE CONTINUES.

HE SAID A CERTIFICATE OF EXEMPTION WOULD INITIALLY EXEMPT A BEDSPACE APARTMENT FROM OBTAINING A LICENCE.
