CHECKS CARRIED OUT BY THE TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT HAVE REVEALED THAT TRAFFIC QUEUES IN THE CROSS HARBOUR TUNNEL'S NON AUTOTOLL LANES ARE NO WORSE THAN BEFORE AUTOTOLL WAS INTRODUCED, THE SECRETARY FOR TRANSPORT, MR HAIDER BARMA, TOLD THE LEGISLATION COUNCIL TODAY (WEDNESDAY).
IN A WRITTEN REPLY TO A QUESTION BY DR THE HON CONRAD LAM KUI- SHING, MR BARMA SAID: "THE PRESENT ARRANGEMENTS ARE WORKING WELL.
HE SAID THE AUTOTOLL SYSTEM HAD BEEN IMPLEMENTED BY THE CROSS HARBOUR TUNNEL CO LTD ON ITS OWN INITIATIVE AS A COST-EFFECTIVE MEANS OF COLLECTING TUNNEL TOLLS, AND IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY ELECTRONIC ROAD PRICING SCHEME.

THERE IS AN AVERAGE OF 21,600 VEHICLES USING THE CROSS HARBOUR TUNNEL AUTOTOLL LANES DAILY WHILE 104,400 VEHICLES ARE USING THE OTHER LANES. SEVEN TOLL LANES ARE PROVIDED IN EACH DIRECTION.
"FOR HONG KONG-BOUND TRAFFIC, ONLY THE LANE AT THE EXTREME LEFT OF THE TOLL PLAZA IS DESIGNATED FOR AUTOTOLL USE WHILE THERE ARE TWO SUCH LANES. ONE AT EITHER END OF THE TOLL PLAZA, FOR KOWLOON-BOUND TRAFFIC.
"TWO AUTOTOLL LANES ARE NECESSARY FOR THE KOWLOON-BOUND TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF THE CONFIGURATION OF THE ROAD SYSTEM AT THAT END OF THE TUNNEL, AND THE NEED TO AVOID EXTENSIVE LANE CHANGING BY VEHICLES, SAID.
