DECISION TO ESTABLISH A NEW GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT TO EXCLUSIVELY WITH TELECOMS REGULATION DEMONSTRATES THE GOVERNMENT'S COMMITMENT ΤΟ ENSURING AN EFFECTIVE REGULATION OF THE TELECOMS INDUSTRY THAT HONG KONG HAS ENJOYED FOR SO MANY YEARS, HE SAID.

HE ALSO SAID THE GOVERNMENT HAD INTRODUCED A SENSIBLE SYSTEM OF REGULATION TO DEVELOP A FAIR AND EFFICIENT COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT TO MAKE HONG KONG THE WORLD LEADER IN TELECOMS SERVICES.

OVER 15,000 TENANCY ENQUIRIES HANDLED LAST YEAR

MORE THAN 15,000 PUBLIC ENQUIRIES ON TENANCY PROBLEMS WERE HANDLED UNDER THE RENT OFFICER SCHEME LAST YEAR.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE CITY AND NEW TERRITORIES ADMINISTRATION SAID TODAY (THURSDAY) THAT MOST OF THE 15,118 ENQUIRIES WERE RELATED TO LEGAL PROCEEDINGS OF TENANCY DISPUTES, THE RECOVERY OR EVICTION PREMISES, AND THE USE OR COMPLETION OF SPECIFIED FORMS.

UNDER THE SCHEME, RENT OFFICERS FROM THE RATING AND VALUATION DEPARTMENT ARE ON DUTY AT SET TIME EACH WEEK DURING OFFICE HOURS AT 15 DISTRICT OFFICES TO ADVISE MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ON TENANCY MATTERS.

THEY ALSO DIRECTLY DEAL WITH CASES REFERRED BY STAFF OF ALL PUBLIC ENQUIRY SERVICE CENTRES (PESCS) OF THE DISTRICT OFFICES.

THE DISTRICT OFFICES PROVIDING SUCH SERVICES ARE CENTRAL AND WESTERN, EASTERN, SOUTHERN AND WAN CHAI ON HONG KONG ISLAND; KOWLOON CITY, KWUN TONG, MONG KOK, SHAM SHUI PO, WONG TAI SIN AND YAU TSIM IN KOWLOON; AND KWAI TSING, SHA TIN, TSUEN WAN, TUEN MUN AND YUEN LONG IN THE NEW TERRITORIES.
