THE LARGER INCREASE IN VOLUME TERMS FOR JEWELLERY ITEMS WAS DUE TO A FALL IN PRICES.
ON THE OTHER HAND, SALES OF OTHER FOODSTUFFS RECORDED A 4% INCREASE IN VALUE BUT A 3% DECREASE IN VOLUME, AFTER TAKING ACCOUNT THE PRICE CHANGES.
COMPARING THE FIRST NINE MONTHS OF THIS YEAR WITH THE PERIOD LAST YEAR, TOTAL RETAIL SALES ROSE BY 19% IN VALUE AND 13% VOLUME.

COMPARING WITH AUGUST 1992, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON MAY BE AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FACTORS, TOTAL RETAIL SALES IN SEPTEMBER DECREASED BY 4% IN VALUE AND 5% IN VOLUMS.
