THE
AVERAGE INCREASE OF 16 PER CENT APPROVED FOR HYF IS THRER PERCENTAGE POINTS LOWER THAN THE 19 PER CENT RISE IN THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX (A) SINCE THE LAST HYF FARE REVISION 20 MONTHS AGO NOVEMBER 1990.
BOTH THE
GOVERNMENT AND HYF ARE CONSCIOUS OF NEEDS OF RESIDENTS ON OUTLYING ISLANDS.
IN
THE TRANSPORT
WITH THIS IN MIND, THE AVERAGE INCREASE IN FARES FOR OUTLYING ISLAND SERVICES ON WEEKDAYS HAS BEEN CONSCIOUSLY SET AT A LOWER RATE OF 10.6 PER CENT, WHICH IS ABOUT 9 PERCENTAGE POINTS LOWER THAN THE GENERAL INFLATION RATE SINCE THE LAST FARE REVIEW.
IN ADDITION, WITH EFFECT FROM AUGUST 1, RETURN TICKETS AT WEEKDAY FARES WILL BE VALID FOR TRAVEL THROUGHOUT WEEKENDS HOLIDAYS.

AND FROM AUGUST 21, THE CONCESSIONARY TICKETS WILL BE SOLD IN ADVANCE ON FRIDAY NIGHT TO CATER FOR RESIDENTS' TRANSPORT NEEDS.
A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID THE FARE INCREASES WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH HIGHER HAD HYF NOT TAKEN CONSCIOUS STEPS IN CONSULTATION WITH THE GOVERNMENT TO KEEP COST DOWN BY CURTAILING SIX LOSS-INCURRING ROUTES IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS AND TO INCREASE ITS REVENUE BY ATTRACTING MORE ADVERTISING ON VESSELS AND PIER TOPS.
THE NEW FARES ARE NEEDED NOT ONLY TO OFFSET HIGHER OPERATING COSTS AND LOWER PATRONAGE ON SOME ROUTES, BUT ALSO TO FURTHER ITS SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC.
