YOUNG PEOPLE ARE KEEN CONSUMERS OF THE MASS MEDIA, ACCORDING TO A SURVEY CONDUCTED BY THE COMMISSION ON YOUTH.

THEY SPEND AN AVERAGE OF MORE THAN 21 HOURS WATCHING TELEVISION EVERY WEEK, 7.5 HOURS LISTENING TO THE RADIO AND 3.5 HOURS READING NEWSPAPERS.

ANNOUNCING THE FINDINGS OF THE SURVEY AT A PRESS CONFERENCE TODAY (FRIDAY), THE CONVENOR OF THE WORKING GROUP ON THE STUDY ON THE INFLUENCE OF THE MASS MEDIA ON YOUTH, PROFESSOR NELSON CHOW, SAID YOUNG PEOPLE'S CHOICE OF THE MEDIA AND ITS PROGRAMMES OR CONTENTS DEPENDED LARGELY ON HOW MUCH ENTERTAINMENT THEY COULD GET THROUGH THAT PARTICULAR MEDIUM.

FOR EXAMPLE, YOUNG

PEOPLE PREFER ENTERTAINING TELEVISION PROGRAMMES AND DRAMA SERIES. THE ENTERTAINMENT PAGE IN NEWSPAPERS IS

ALSO POPULAR.

PROFESSOR CHOW SAID: "THE MORE LEISURE TIME THE STUDENTS THE HIGHER THEIR PROPENSITY TO WATCH TELEVISION, READ MAGAZINES AND PLAY VIDEO GAMES.

"YET, STUDENTS CAN STILL FIND TIME ΤΟ READ NEWSPAPERS EVEN WHEN THEY ARE BUSY, WORKING YOUTH, ON THE OTHER HAND, WOULD READ COMIC BOOKS EVEN IF THEY ARE OCCUPIED.

'IDOL ADORATION IS PREVALENT AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. ABOUT 40 PER CENT HAVE AN IDOL

TELEVISION POP SINGERS, AND MOVIE OR STARS.
