FULL-FLEDGED PROMOTION CAMPAIGN FOR LEGGO ELECTIONS

SET IN MOTION

EYE-CATCHING BANNERS AND ENLIVENING BUNTING PUT UP IN THE STREETS THROUGHOUT THE TERRITORY IN RECENT DAYS FORM A PUBLICITY COBWEB THAT PULLED THE HECTIC CROWDS FROM THEIR HELTER-SKELTER STEPS WITH ONE CLEAR MESSAGE: GO TO VOTE.

ALREADY, THE GOVERNMENT HAS PUMPED A RECORD SUM OF MONEY FOR THE PUBLICITY OF AN ELECTION $9.6 MILLION

TO PROMOTE THE FORTHCOMING LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ELECTIONS WITH ONE THING IN MIND: ENSURE THE FIRST-EVER DIRECT ELECTIONS TO THE LEGCO, A SUCCESS.

THE LUMPSUM NEARLY DOUBLED THE TOTAL SUM DRAWN FOR THE 1991 MUNICIPAL COUNCIL AND DISTRICT BOARD ELECTIONS PUT TOGETHER.

ELECTORAL OFFICIALS ARE NOW ROLLING UP THEIR SLEEVES AND GETTING DOWN TO ADD THEIR FINISHING TOUCHES TO THE ALL-OUT PROMOTION CAMPAIGN FOR THE ELECTIONS WHICH WILL OPEN A NEW PAGE IN THE HISTORY OF HONG KONG.

CAMPAIGN WORK HAS ALREADY GOT ON THE RAILS SINCE MID-LAST MONTH AND WILL REACH A CRESCENDO IN THE COMING WEEKS LEADING TO THE POLLING DAYS IN THE MIDDLE OF NEXT MONTH.

ELECTIONS FOR THE FUNCTIONAL CONSTITUENCIES WILL BE HELD ON SEPTEMBER 12 AND THE DIRECT ELECTIONS, ON SEPTEMBER 15.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE REGISTRATION AND ELECTORAL OFFICE SAID TODAY (SATURDAY) THAT CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS WILL INCLUDE ADVERTISEMENT ON CINEMAS AND NEWSPAPERS, ANOTHER ROUND OF POSTER DISPLAY AND A THEME SONG ON THE ELECTIONS PRODUCED BY A LOCAL TELEVISION STATION,

HE SAID MORE THAN 60 OUTDOOR DISPLAY SIGNS HAVE BEEN PUT UP IN VARIOUS STRATEGIC LOCATIONS SUCH AS TUNNEL EXITS, ROUNDABOUTS, BUSY PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS AND SHOPPING MALLS.

SOME 500,000 COPIES OF PROMOTION LEAFLET WILL BE PLACED AT COUNTERS OF MAJOR BANKS AND THEIR BRANCHES, SHOPS AND POPULAR SHOPPING ARCADES, KCR AND MTR STATIONS.

APART FROM THE LEAFLETS, NEARLY 20,000 POSTERS HAVE BREN PUT UP AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS.

THE CITY AND NEW TERRITORIES ADMINISTRATION HAS ALSO PUT UP WINDOW DISPLAYS AT ALL ITS DISTRICT OFFICES, AS WELL AS BANNERS AND BILLBOARDS AT CONSPICUOUS SPOTS. THIS IS IN ADDITION TO THE 8,000-PLUS BUNTING PUT UP ON LAMPPOSTS THROUGHOUT THE TERRITORY.

MEANWHILE, THE OFFICE HAS STARTED ISSUING POLL CARDS TO SOME 1.9 MILLION ELECTORS SINCE EARLY LAST WEEK.
