ON THE SAME BASIS OF COMPARISON, RETAIL SALES OF DURABLES WENT UP BY 16 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 11 PER CENT CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS ROSE BY 7 PER CENT VALUE BUT DROPPED SLIGHTLY BY 1 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.
RETAIL SALES OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS INCREASED BY 1 PER CENT IN VALUE. AFTER DISCOUNTING THE ESTIMATED INCREASE IN PRICES, THERE A DECLINE
WAS OF 5 PER CENT IN VOLUME, LARGELY DUE TO THE RETAIL SALES OF JEWELLERY, WATCHES AND CLOCKS.

ANALYSED BY SELECTED TRADES, RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS INCREASED BY 25 PER CENT IN AND 20 PER CENT IN VOLUME. SALES IN DEPARTMENT STORES ROSE BY 14 CENT IN VALUE AND 6 PER CENT IN VOLUME.
