GREATER DIVERSITY SHOULD BE INTRODUCED INTO EDUCATION SYSTEM
THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO INJECT GREATER DIVERSITY INTO HONG KONG'S EDUCATION SYSTEM TO CATER FOR THOSE WHO NEED A DIFFERENT SORT OF EDUCATION, THE SECRETARY FOR EDUCATION AND MANPOWER, MR K.Y. YEUNG, SAID TODAY (WEDNESDAY).
COMPULSORY
SPEAKING AT THE 34TH GRADUATION CEREMONY OF THE HONG KONG JUVENILE CARE CENTRE, MR YRUNG SAID THAT
EDUCATION HAD MEANT THAT STUDENTS WITH A WIDE RANGE OF ABILITIES, INTERESTS AND NEEDS HAD BEEN BROUGHT INTO THE EDUCATION SYSTEM.

WHILE THE COMMON CORE CURRICULUM WAS MEETING THE NEEDS OF MAJORITY OF STUDENTS, NO MATTER HOW MUCH DIVERSITY WAS INTRODUCED, WAS CLEAR THAT THE COMMON CORE CURRICULUM WOULD STILL FAIL TO MEET THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS WHO WERE EITHER AT THE EXTREMES OF THE ABILITY RANGE OR WERE UNMOTIVATED TO LEARNING, MR YEUNG SAID.
"IT IS THEREFORE NECESSARY TO PROVIDE THEM WITH ALTERNATIVE CURRICULA AND EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES," HE POINTED OUT.
REGARDING THE POSSIBLE MEASURES IN THIS DIRECTION, MR YEUNG SAID THAT A FIRST POSSIBILITY MIGHT BE THE INTRODUCTION OF BRIDGING COURSES FOR STUDENTS WISHING TO TRANSFER TO PRE-VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS SECONDARY 2 OR SECONDARY 3.
