NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC DURING THE EVENING PEAK PERIOD (6 PM 7 PM) REMAINED AT ABOUT 3,000 VEHICLES, BUT THE JOURNEY TIME FROM WONG TAI SIN, VIA THE WESTERN LUNG CHEUNG ROAD APPROACH TO THE SOUTH PORTALOF LION ROCK TUNNEL, HAD BEEN REDUCED BY NINE MINUTES.

AT TAI PO ROAD

THE SOUTHBOUND TRAFFIC ALONG TAI PO ROAD DURING THE MORNING PEAK PERIOD HAD DROPPED FROM 2,200 TO 1,600 VEHICLES, A 27 PER CENT REDUCTION;

THE NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC DURING THE MORNING PEAK PERIOD HAD DROPPED FROM 1,100 TO 1,000 VEHICLES, A NINE PER CENT REDUCTION;

THE SOUTHBOUND TRAFFIC DURING THE EVENING PEAK PERIOD DROPPED FROM 1,400 ΤΟ 1,200 VEHICLES, A 14 PER REDUCTION;

THE NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC DURING THE EVENING PEAK PERIOD INCREASED FROM 1,200 TO 1,400 VEHICLES, A 17 PER INCREASE; AND

NO PERSISTENT TRAFFIC QUEUE WAS OBSERVED ON TAI PO ROAD IN EITHER DIRECTION DURNG EITHER THE MORNING OR EVENING PEAK HOURS.

AT SHING MUN TUNNELS

THE TRAFFIC FLOWED SMOOTHLY IN BOTH DIRECTIONS, AND NO TRAFFIC QUEUE WAS OBSERVED AT EITHER END OF THE TUNNELS.

NO DECISION YET ON REMOVING BANYAN TREE

THE GOVERNMENT HAS NOT TAKEN ANY DECISION TO REMOVE THE BANYAN TREE OUTSIDE THE WEST WING OF THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT OFFICES, THE SECRETARY FOR PLANNING, ENVIRONMENT AND LANDS, THE HON GRAHAM BARNES, INFORMED THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TODAY (WEDNESDAY).

MR BARNES STATED THIS IN A WRITTEN REPLY TO A QUESTION FROM THE RON PETER WONG, WHO HAD EXPRESSED CONCERN THAT THE TREE, WHICH WAS BELIEVED TO BE 100 YEAR OLDS, WOULD BE REMOVED.

MR BARNES SAID ON THE CONTRARY, THE GOVERNMENT HAD REQUIRED THE ARCHITECTS FOR THE FOOTBRIDGE PROJECT TO COME UP WITH A PROPOSAL THAT WOULD AVOID ANY SUBSTANTIAL INTERFERENCE WITH THE TREE.

HE SAID THE ARCHITECTS CONCERNED WERE NOW WORKING ON THE

PROPOSAL.
