EMPLOYMENT PERIOD OF WOMEN MUST BE SPECIFIED
EMPLOYERS ARE TODAY (SATURDAY) REMINDED THAT THEY ARE
REQUIRED
BY LAW TO FIX AND SET OUT IN A NOTICE THE PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT AND REST INTERVALS OF WOMEN AND YOUNG PERSONS THEY EMPLOY.
IN A RECENT COURT CASE, YAMADA ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING (HK) CO. LTD IN WONG CHUK HANG WAS FINED $5,000 BY A CENTRAL MAGISTRATE FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENT.
MR TSANG KIN-WOO, SAID
SENIOR LABOUR OFFICER (PROSECUTION), THE COMPANY WAS FOUND DURING A VISIT BY LABOUR INSPECTORS то HAVE FAILED TO PUT UP A NOTICE SETTING OUT THE PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT AND BREAKS FOR ITS 49 WOMEN EMPLOYEES.
MR TSANG EXPLAINED THAT UNDER THE WOMEN AND YOUNG PERSONS (INDUSTRY) REGULATIONS, AN EMPLOYER MUST FIX THE PERMISSIBLE HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT, THE INTERVALS FOR MEALS OR REST AND THE ARRANGEMENT OF REST DAYS FOR WOMEN AND YOUNG PERSONS EMPLOYED IN AN INDUSTRIAL UNDERTAKING.
"THIS INFORMATION SHOULD ALSO BE SET OUT IN A PRESCRIBED FORM AND DISPLAYED CONSPICUOUSLY IN THE WORKPLACE, HE ADDED.

ANY EMPLOYER FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENT WILL COMMIT AN OFFENCE AND BE LIABLE TO A MAXIMUM FINE OF $10,000.
MR TSANG ALSO REMINDED EMPLOYERS OF THEIR LEGAL OBLIGATION TO TAKE OUT INSURANCE POLICIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF COMPENSATING THEIR EMPLOYEES IN CASE OF INJURY AT WORK.
HE WAS REFERRING. TO ANOTHER COURT CASE IN WHICH THE PROPRIETOR OF KIU YUEN HAIR SALOON IN TUEN MUN, CHAN HAU-WAH, WAS FINED $2,500 BY A TUEN MUN MAGISTRATE FOR FAILING TO TAKE OUT AN INSURANCE POLICY FOR HER TWO EMPLOYEES.

UNDER THE EMPLOYEES' COMPENSATION ORDINANCE ALL EMPLOYERS ARE REQUIRED ΤΟ TAKE OUT INSURANCE POLICIES то COVER THEIR FULL LIABILITIES TO COMPENSATE THEIR EMPLOYEES FOR INJURY OR DEATH AT WORK.
**THIS IS TO ENSURE THAT AN INJURED EMPLOYEE WILL OBTAIN COMPENSATION TO WHICH HE IS ENTITLED UNDER THE LAW, MR TSANG EXPLAINED.
"AN EMPLOYER WHO BREACHES THIS PROVISION IS LIABLE ΤΟ A MAXIMUM FINE OF $20,000 AND ONE YEAR'S IMPRISONMENT," HE WARNED.
