AND FEBRUARY THE VALUE OF TOTAL RETAIL SALES IN JANUARY
1990 THE SAME PERIOD COMBINED DECREASED BY 2 PER CENT WHEN COMPARED WITH IN 1989 WHILST THEIR VOLUME DECREASED BY 7 PER CENT, ACCORDING TO THE CENSUS PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF A SURVEY RELEASED TODAY (FRIDAY) BY THE AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.
CONSUMER DEMAND AND TOURIST THESE FIGURES SUGGEST THAT BOTH SPENDING REMAINED WEAK IN THE FIRST TWO MONTHS OF 1990.

CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS DECREASED BY 3 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 5 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME, AND PARTS WERE WHILE THE CORRESPONDING DECREASES FOR MOTOR VEHICLES 25 PER CENT AND 29 PER CENT.
