THE VALUE OF TOTAL RETAIL SALES IN JANUARY 1990, $10,596 MILLION, DECREASED BY 1 PER CENT WHEN

ESTIMATED AT 1989 WHILE THEIR VOLUME DECREASED BY 5 PER

COMPARED WITH JANUARY PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF A SURVEY RELEASED TODAY (MONDAY) BY THE

CENT, ACCORDING AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.

TO THE CENSUS

THESE FIGURES SUGGEST THAT BOTH CONSUMER SPENDING REMAINED WEAK IN JANUARY 1990.

PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 9 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

ON THE SAME BASIS OF COMPARISON, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY 3 DECREASED BY 3 PER CENT IN VOLUME. CONSUMER PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 19 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

OTHER CONSUMER GOODS DECREASED BY 3 PER

AND 8 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

SUPERMARKETS INCREASED DEPARTMENT STORES

ANALYSED BY SELECTED TRADES, SALES OF BY 34 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 23 PER CENT IN VOLUME. ROSE BY 11 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 5 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

VEHICLES

ON THE OTHER HAND, CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR AND PARTS DROPPED BY 6 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE SALES VOLUME. MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS RECORDED DECREASES

AND 8 PER CENT IN CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 36 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

WHEN COMPARED WITH DECEMBER 1989, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON MAY BE AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FOR JANUARY 1990 INCREASED BY 6 PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME.
