IN ADDITION, WITH THE ADVICE OF THE DB'S, THE DISTRICT OFFICER, THROUGH HIS CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE DMC. WAS ABLE TO CO-ORDINATE GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL TO ENSURE THAT DISTRICT NEEDS WERE MET AND DISTRICT PROBLEMS RESOLVED EFFECTIVELY.
OF THE
MR LAN FURTHER POINTED OUT THAT ACCORDING TO A REVIEW DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION SCHEME IN 1987, DB MEMBERS GENERALLY CONSIDERED THAT A CORDIAL WORKING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE OFFICE AND THE DB WAS ESSENTIAL TO THE SUCCESS OP THE ADMINISTRATION SCHEME.

THE REVIEW RECOMMENDED, AMONG OTHER THINGS, THAT THE DISTRICT OFFICE SHOULD CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE DE CHAIRMAN, TO LIAISE WITH RELEVANT DEPARTMENTS TO ENSURE PROMPT ACTION ON THE DB'S REQUESTS AND TO KEEP THE BOARD INFORMED OF PROGRESS.

ALL DISTRICT OFFICES PERFORM OTHER TASKS AS WELL, SUCH AS OPERATING ENQUIRY COUNTERS WHERE MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC COULD OBTAIN A VARIETY OF SERVICES, MR LAN CONTINUED.
DURING 1988, THE 67 PUBLIC ENQUIRY SERVICE COUNTERS IN THE 19 DISTRICT OFFICES HANDLED A TOTAL 6.5 MILLION ENQUIRIES/CASES.
DURING NATURAL DISASTERS OR EMERGENCIES, DISTRICT OFFICE STAFF WERE MOBILISED TO CO-ORDINATE RELIEF OPERATIONS AND FIND TEMPORARY SHELTERS FOR THE HOMELESS.
IN ADDITION, THE DISTRICT OFFICE WAS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR NUMEROUS OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS. THEY INCLUDED:

STIMULATING AND ORGANISING COMMUNITY BUILDING SUCH AS ORGANISING DISTRICT CULTURAL AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES, AND ASSISTING IN THE FORMATION OF COMMITTEES AND OWNERS CORPORATIONS, AND SO ON;
