LEAFLET AND HOTLINE ADVICE ON HYGIENIC WAYS TO PREPARE VEGETABLES

IN VIEW OF THE PUBLIC CONCERN OVER RECENT INCIDENTS OF FOOD POISONING BY CONTAMINATED VEGETABLES, A LEAFLET PROVIDING BRIEF GUIDANCE ON WHAT MEASURES TO BE TAKEN TO AVOID THE RISK OF CONSUMING VEGETABLES TAINTED WITH AGRICULTURAL PESTICIDE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC REFERENCE.

PRODUCED BY THE MUNICIPAL SERVICES BRANCH UNDER THE AUSPICES OF URBAN AND REGIONAL COUNCILS, COPIES OF THE LEAFLETS WILL BE AVAILABLE FREE AT ALL DISTRICT OFFICES STARTING FROM TUESDAY (JULY 12).

BEGINNING TODAY (FRIDAY), A 24-HOUR HOTLINE MAINTAINED BY THE HEALTH EDUCATION UNIT OF MSH, ALSO PROVIDES A TAPED MESSAGE ON VEGETABLE AND FOOD HYGIENE.

THE TWO-MINUTE MESSAGE IN CANTONESE WILL GIVE ADVICE ON THE PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES WHICH SHOULD BE TAKEN.

DO NOT BUY VEGETABLES WHICH HAVE STRANGE SMELL:

WASH VEGETABLES THOROUGHLY WITH WATER;

SOAK THEM IN WATER FOR SOME TIME;

* BOIL THEM FOR A WHILE AND DRAIN THE WATER; AND

COOK THEM THOROUGHLY BEFORE CONSUMPTION.

MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE WELCOME TO LEAVE, THEIR QUESTIONS AND TELEPHONE NUMBERS WHICH WILL BE RECORDED AFTER THE MESSAGE.

THEIR QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED INDIVIDUALLY BY STAFF HEALTH EDUCATION UNIT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
