THE FINANCE COMMITTEE WILL BE ASKED TOMORROW (WEDNESDAY] то APPROVE A COMMITMENT OF $11.5 MILLION FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPUTERISED TOLL COLLECTION SYSTEM AT THE LION ROCK TUNNEL..
THE EXISTING SYSTEM,
WHICH WAS INSTALLED IN 1977, HAS A VEHICLES PASSING THROUGH EIGHT
MAXIMUM DESIGN CAPACITY TO HANDLE COLLECTION BOOTHS ONLY.
ΤΟ INCORPORATE AN ADDITIONAL COPE WITH THE SUBSTANTIAL
THUS, IT COULD NOT BE EXPANDED FOUR TOLL BOOTHS NEEDED IN LATE 1985 ΤΟ INCREASE IN THE VOLUME OF TRAFFIC.
AS AN INTERIM MEASURE, INDIVIDUAL MICRO-PROCESSOR-BASED TOLL COLLECTION UNITS, WHICH ARE NOT LINKED TO THE CENTRAL COMPUTER, WERE INSTALLED IN THE ADDITIONAL TOLL BOOTHS.
THIS HAS RESULTED IN EXTRA WORKLOAD DUE ΤΟ THE NEED FOR MANUAL COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA AT THE ADDITIONAL TOLL BOOTHS.
BESIDES, THE EXISTING SYSTEM IS FOUND TO BE APPROACHING THE END OF ITS SERVICEABLE LIFE WITH AN AVERAGE OF 82 FAULTS PER YEAR, THE CAUSES OF HALF OF WHICH CANNOT BE IDENTIFIED.
HENCE, IT IS
SYSTEM.
