PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF RETAIL SALES SURVEY FOR NOVEMBER

1986 WHILE

THE VALUE OF TOTAL RETAIL SALES IN NOVEMBER 1987, ESTIMATED $7,580 MILLION, WAS 18 PER CENT HIGHER THAN IN NOVEMBER THEIR VOLUME WAS 10 PER CENT HIGHER, ACCORDING TO THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY RELEASED TODAY (THURSDAY) BY THE STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.

THIS INCREASE WAS IN LINE WITH THE GROWTH IN THE MONTHS OF 1987. IT SEEMED THAT THE UPHEAVALS IN THE STOCK OCTOBER HAD HAD LITTLE EFFECT ON RETAIL SALES IN GENERAL IN THE DEPARTMENT SAID.

FIRST 10 MARKET IN NOVEMBER,

OF FUELS

ANALYSED BY MAJOR TRADE GROUPS, RETAIL SALES INCREASED BY 12 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 4 PER CENT IN VOLUME IN NOVEMBER 1987 COMPARED WITH NOVEMBER 1986. FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO ROSE BY 9 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 2 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

ON THE SAME BASIS OF COMPARISON, RETAIL SALES OF "OTHER CONSUMER GOODS" ROSE SUBSTANTIALLY BY 27 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 19 PER CENT IN VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES WENT UP BY 16 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 8 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY 6 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE BUT DROPPED SLIGHTLY BY 1 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

ANALYSED BY SELECTED TRADES, WHICH FORM PART OF THE RELEVANT MAJOR TRADE GROUPS, SALES OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS INCREASED SUBSTANTIALLY BY 54 PER CENT IN VALUR AND 42 PER CENT IN VOLUME.

DEPARTMENT STORES ROSE BY 30 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND

21 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

SUPERMARKETS SALES INCREASED BY 17 PER CENT. IN VALUE AND 12 PER CENT IN VOLUME.

CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS INCREASED BY 3 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE BUT DECREASED BY Ź PER CENT SALES VOLUME.

COMPARING THE PERIOD JANUARY TO NOVEMBER 1987 WITH THE SAME PERIOD IN 1986, TOTAL RETAIL SALES INCREASED BY 17 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 10 PER CENT IN VOLUME.

ANALYSED BY MAJOR TRADE GROUPS, FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKA AND TOBACCO INCREASED MODERATELY BY 10 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 5 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME. FUELS WENT UP BY 4 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 3 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

ON THE SAME BASIS OF COMPARISON, RETAIL SALES OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS" AND CONSUMER DURABLES INCREASED BY 22 PER CENT AND 19 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN VALUE AND 13 PER CENT AND 10 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN VOLUME, CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS UP BY 15 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 8 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.
