DR REED ALSO POINTED TO THE HUGE COSTS
INVOLVED IN PROVIDING FOR COST-EFFICIENT AND ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE COLLECTION, TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL OF LIQUID WASTES. HÉ CITED SHANGHAI, WHICH WAS SPENDING HK$ 15 BILLION TO DEAL WITH PART OF ITS SEWAGE PROBLEM, AND TAIPEI, WHICH WAS SPENDING HK$ 20 BILLION.
"IF WE ARE GOING TO PROVIDE THE SEWERAGE INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDED TO ENSURE THE CONTINUING VIABILITY OF OUR EFFLUENT-PRODUCING INDUSTRIES, AND TO AVOID CREATING HEALTH HAZARDS AS A RESULT OF SEWAGE POLLUTION, MORE EMPHASIS WILL HAVE TO BE PLACED ON INVESTMENT IN SEWERAGE INFRASTRUCTURE. THIS WOULD INEVITABLY MEAN BOMB ADJUSTMENT OF SPENDING PRIORITIES," HE SAID.

IN THAT RESPECT, THE FIRST BERTH OF THE THREE-BERTH TERMINAL 6 WOULD OPEN IN MID-1988 AND THE DEVELOPMENT RIGHTS FOR A FURTHER THREE- BERTH TERMINAL 7 WOULD BE AWARDED BY APRIL THIS YEAR.
"TERMINALS 6 AND 7 TOGETHER WILL, DOUBLE THE CHUNG," HE SAID.
