RETAJL SALES

ANALYSED BY MAJOR TRADE GROUPS,

OF FUELS INCREASED BY 13 PER CENT IN VALUE AND FOUR PER CENT TN VOLUME IN SEPTEMBER THIS YEAR COMPARED WITH SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR. FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO ROSE BY NINE PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND THREE PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

ON THE SAME BASIS OF COMPARISON, RETAIL SALES OF "OTHER CONSUMER GOODS" ROSE SUBSTANTIALLY BY 24 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 15 PER CENT IN VOLUME. "CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS' AND CONSUMER DURABLES WENT UP BY 22 PER CENT AND 20 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN SALES VALUE AND 15 PER CENT AND 11 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN SALES VOLUME.

ANALYSED BY SELECTED TRADES, SALES OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS INCREASED SUBSTANTIALLY BY 19 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 48 PER CENT IN VOLUME, DEPARTMENT STORES ALSO ROSE SUBSTANTIALLY BY 46 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 37 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

SUPERMARKET SALES INCREASED BY 16 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 10 PER CENT IN VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS HAD AN INCREASE OF FIVE PER CENT IN SALES VALUE, BUT WITH LITTLE CHANGE IN SALES VOLUME.

COMPARING THE FIRST NINE MONTHS OF THIS YEAR WITH THE SAME PERIOD IN 1986, IN RESPECT OF THE MAJOR TRADE GROUPS, FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO INCREASED MODERATELY BY 10 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND SIX PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME. FUELS WENT UP BY THREE PER CENT IN BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME.

ON THE SAME BASIS OF COMPARISON, RETAIL SALES OF "OTHER CONSUMER GOODS" AND CONSUMER DURABLES BOTH INCREASED BY 20 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 12 PER CENT AND 11 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN VOLUME. CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS WENT UP BY 16 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND NINE PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

ANALYSED BY SELECTED TRADES, SALES OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS INCREASED SUBSTANTIALLY BY 43 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 29 PER CENT IN VOLUME.

SALES BY DEPARTMENT STORES AND SUPERMARKETS WENT UP BY 27 TAR CENT AND 20 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN VALUE AND 19 PER CENT AND 16 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN VOLUME.

CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND INCREASED BY 12 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND FIVE PER CENT IN VOLUME.
