ANALYSED BY SELECTED TRADES, RETAIL SALES OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS INCREASED SUBSTANTIALLY IN VALUE AND MODERATELY IN VOLUME.
BOTH CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS, AND SUPERMARKETS RECORDED MODERATE INCREASES IN SALES VALUE BUT SMALLER INCREASE IN SALES VOLUME. DEPARTMENT STORES INCREASED SLIGHTLY IN SALES VALUE BUT DECREASED SLIGHTLY IN SALES VOLUME.
COMPARING THE THREE-MONTH PERIOD MAY-JULY 1986 WITH THE SAME PERIOD IN 1985, TOTAL RETAIL SALES INCREASED BY 5 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 1 PER CENT IN VOLUME. RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS SHOWED INCREASES OF 20 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 13 PER CENT IN VOLUME.
FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO RECORDED INCREASES OF 5 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 3 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES AND OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ ROSE BY 7 PER CENT AND 3 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN SALES VALUE, BUT BOTH DROPPED BY 1 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.
FUELS WENT DOWN BY 15 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE BUT REGISTERED ALMOST NO CHANGE IN SALES VOLUME. RETAIL SALES OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS RECORDED A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE IN VALUE BUT A SLIGHT INCREASE IN VOLUME.
SUPERMARKETS HAD A SLIGHT INCREASE IN SALES VALUE BUT ALMOST NO CHANGE IN SALES VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS, AND DEPARTMENT STORES SHOWED SLIGHT INCREASES
IN SALES VALUE BUT SLIGHT DROPS IN SALES VOLUME.
WHEN COMPARED WITH JUNE 1986, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON IS AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FACTORS, TOTAL RETAIL SALES FOR JULY 1986 ROSE BY 8 PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS. RETAIL SALES OF +OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ INCREASED BY 13 PER CENT AND 14 PER CENT IN VALUE AND VOLUME RESPECTIVELY AND THE CORRESPONDING INCREASES FOR CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS WERE 5 PER CENT AND 8 PER CENT.
BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME OF CONSUMER DURABLES INCREASED BY 6 PER CENT, WHILE FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO ROSE BY 3 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 2 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME. FUELS HAD AN INCREASE OF 1 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND OF 2 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.
RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS INCREASED MODERATELY IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME. SUPERMARKETS AND MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS EXPERIENCED SLIGHT INCREASES IN BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME. DEPARTMENT STORES SHOWED A SLIGHT INCREASE IN SALES VALUE AND A MODERATE INCREASE IN SALES VOLUME.
