THE OPPORTUNITY HAS ALSO BEEN TAKEN, IN RELATION TO THE DISPLAY AT A TUNNEL OF ANY TRAFFIC SIGN OR ROAD MARKING PRESCRIBED BY THE ROAD TRAFFIC (TRAFFIC CONTROL) REGULATIONS, TO AMEND THE REGULATIONS TO THE EFFECT THAT A DRIVER WHO FAILS TO CONFORM TO THE INDICATION OF ANY SIGN OR ROAD MARKING WHILE DRIVING IN A TUNNEL, IS LIABLE TO THE SAME LEVEL OF PENALTY AS IF HE HAD FAILED TO SO CONFORM WHEN DRIVING ON A ROAD.

THE OFFENDER IS LIABLE ON FIRST CONVICTION TO A FINE OF $5 JIJ AND TO IMPRISONMENT FOR THREE MONTHS, AND ON SECOND OR SUBSEQUENT CONVICTION TO A FINE OF $10 000 AND TO IMPRISONMENT FOR SIX MONTHS.

EDUCATION COMMISSION SEEKS PUBLIC VIEWS

THE EDUCATION COMMISSION IS CALLING FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS ON THO ISSUES WHICH IT WISHES TO CONSIDER IN THE NEXT PHASE OF ITS WORK.

A SPOKESMAN SAID TODAY (FRIDAY) THE EDUCATION COMMISSION HAD NOW COMPLETED WORK ON ITS SECOND REPORT, AND WAS PREPARING TO STUDY FURTHER ISSUES FOR FUTURE REPORTS.

FOLLOWING A REQUEST TO THE ADMINISTRATION FROM THE UMELCO STANDING PANEL ON EDUCATION, AND AFTER CONSULTATION, THE COMMISSION HAD UNDERTAKEN TO STUDY CURRICULUM AND BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMS IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS AND JUNIOR SECONDARY CLASSES.

THE SPOKESMAN SAID THE COMMISSION HAD DRAWN UP TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR THIS STUDY. THESE WERE:

FIRST, TO EVALUATE THE ADEQUACY, APPROPRIATENESS AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CURRICULUM IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS AND JUNIOR SECONDARY CLASSES PARTICULARLY IN MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE ACADEMICALLY LESS GIFTED PUPILS AND EQUIPPING THEM FOR THE FUTURE=

SECOND, TO IDENTIFY THE NATURE AND MAGNITUDE OF BEHAVIOURAL AND TO PROBLEMS IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS AND JUNIOR SECONDARY CLASSES, EVALUATE THE ADEQUACY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF EXISTING ARRANGEMENTS AND SERVICES FOR HELP ING PUPILS WITH SUCH PROBLEMS.
