THE CONNAUGHT ROAD SCHEME IS NOT THE ONLY ONE BEING UNDERTAKEN. LESS COSTLY, LESS OBVIOUS, BUT NO LESS IMPORTANT, SCHEME HAS BEEN DEVELOPED BY CONSULTANTS PALMER AND TURNER (HONG KONG) ON BEHALF OF THE HIGHWAYS OFFICE TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO THE WAN CHAI RECLAMATION. THIS WILL ALSO RELIEVE TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN WAN CHAI SOUTH OF GLOUCESTER ROAD, PARTICULARLY ON LOCKHART ROAD, AND PROVIDE AN EASTBOUND BY-PASS TO CROSS-HARBOUR TUNNEL QUEUES.
COSTING A TOTAL OF $105 MILLION AND DUE TO BE COMPLETED BY LATE 1987, THE SCHEME INCLUDES:
1) A FLYOVER AT FENWICK PIER STREET GIVING A DIRECT TWO-LANE
EXIT FROM THE RECLAMATION TO HARCOURT ROAD ;

A FLYOVER AT TONNOCHY ROAD GIVING DIRECT TWO-LANE ENTRY TO THE RECLAMATION FROM GLOUCESTER ROAD WESTBOUND :
A FLYOVER AT HUNG HING ROAD PROVIDING A ONE-LANE EXIT TO GLOUCESTER ROAD EASTBOUND EAST OF THE CROSS-HARBOUR TUNNEL APPROACH ROADS, THUS BYPASSING TUNNEL QUEUES; AND
A SEAFRONT ROAD PROVIDING AN ALTERNATIVE EAST-WEST ROUTE WITHIN THE RECLAMATION AND AT THE SAME TIME AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO GLOUCESTER ROAD.
ALSO INCLUDED IN THE SCHEME WILL BE FOOTBRIDGES AT O'BRIEN ROAD, FENWICK PIER STREET, STEWART ROAD, TONNOCHY ROAD, WAN SHING STREET, WAN CHAI FERRY PIER AT SEAFRONT ROAD: THE WIDENING OF THE FLEMING ROAD FLYOVER AND EXTENSIONS TO FENWICK PIER STREET AND WAN SHING STREET.
MR WESTMORELAND SAID THAT WHEN THE TWO SCHEMES IN CONNAUGHT ROAD AND WAN CHAI ARE COMPLETED TRAFFIC WILL HAVE AN UNINTERRUPTED FLOW FROM CHAI WAN TO WESTERN.
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEMES IN CENTRAL

A SERIES OF TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEMES WILL BE INTRODUCED IN CENTRAL AS PART OF THE ADVANCE WORK TO COPE WITH THE UPGRADING OF CONNAUGHT ROAD WHICH IS SCHEDULED TO START IN JULY.
THIS WAS ANNOUNCED BY MR ANTHONY ELLIOT, SENIOR ENGINEER (PROJECTS) OF THE TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT'S TRAFFIC ENGINEERING HONG KONG DIVISION, TODAY (APRIL 3).
