$45-M RECLAMATION CONTRACT SIGNED

THE NEW TERRITORIES DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT TODAY AWARDED A $45-MILLION CONTRACT TO CHINA HARBOURS ENGINEERING COMPANY FOR A CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECT.
THE CONTRACT WAS SIGNED THIS AFTERNOON BY MR YU KWOK-LEUNG, DEPUTY PROJECT MANAGER OF THE TUEN MUN NEW TOWN DEVELOPMENT OFFICE AND A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE COMPANY.
THE PROJECT INVOLVES THE RECLAMATION OF ABOUT 10.1 HECTARES OF LAND AT PILLAR POINT AND 1.4 HECTARES TO THE SOUTHWEST OF THE TYPHOON SHELTER AS WELL AS THE CONSTRUCTION OF SEA WALLS AND A BREAKWATER.
ALSO UNDER THE CONTRACT, A SECTION OF LUNG MUN ROAD BETWEEN BUTTERFLY BEACH AND PILLAR POINT WILL BE WIDENED TO A DUAL TWO- LANE CARRIAGEWAY TO PROVIDE BETTER ACCESS TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND THE CASTLE PEAK POWER STATION IN THE SOUTH-WESTERN PART OF THE NEW TOWN.
THE PROJECT WILL TAKE ABOUT 13 MONTHS TO COMPLETE.
CLOSURE ORDERS SOUGHT FOR FOUR BUILDINGS

THE BUILDING AUTHORITY TODAY (TUESDAY) DECLARED FOUR PRE-WAR BUILDINGS LIABLE TO BECOME DANGEROUS, AND GAVE NOTICE THAT IT WOULD APPLY FOR ORDERS TO CLOSE THEM.
THEY ARE LOCATED AT 27 TSUNG SAU LANE WEST AND 18, 20 AND 22 TSUNG SAU LANE EAST.
IN A STATEMENT ISSUED THIS MORNING, THE PRINCIPAL GOVERNMENT BUILDING SURVEYOR SAID THAT THESE THREE-STOREY BUILDINGS, CONSTRUCTED WITH LOAD-BEARING WALLS AND TIMBER FLOORS HAD BEEN UNDER SURVEILLANCE SINCE 1979.
AN INSPECTION OF THESE BUILDINGS WAS MADE FOLLOWING A RECENT COLLAPSE OF THE KITCHEN BLOCK OF NO. 25 TSUNG SAU LANE WEST WHICH WAS CLOSED ON JUNE 27, AND WILL BE DEMOLISHED.
THE BUILDINGS WERE IN A DILAPIDATED CONDITION AND WOULD NOT SAFELY WITHSTAND THE DEMOLITION OF NO. 25 TSUNG SAU LANE WEST.
IT WAS THEREFORE NECESSARY TO CLOSE AND DEMOLISH THESE BUILDINGS, IT WAS STATED.
ACCORDINGLY NOTICES OF INTENTION TO APPLY FOR CLOSURE ORDERS IN VICTORIA DISTRICT COURT AT 9.30 AM ON AUGUST 9, 1983 WAS POSTED TODAY.
