$165-MILLION CONTRACT FOR FANLING BYPASS ROAD

THE NEW TERRITORIES DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT TODAY AWARDED A 3165-MILLION CONTRACT TO AOKI CONSTRUCTION CO. LTD. FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FANLING BYPASS ROAD.

THE CONTRACT WAS SIGNED THIS AFTERNOON BY MR MARTIN GARRETT, CHIEF ENGINEER OF THE TAI PO AND FANLING DEVELOPMENT OFFICE OF THE DEPARTMENT, AND MR HIROSHI AIKAWA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER OF THE HONG KONG OFFICE OF AOKI CONSTRUCTION.

THE FANLING BYPASS IS THE SECTION OF THE NEW TERRITORIES CIRCULAR ROUTE BETWEEN THE WO HOP SHEK INTERCHANGE AND THE TAI PO ROAD/FAN KAM ROAD/CASTLE PEAK ROAD ROUNDABOUT.

MR GARRETT SAID THE CONTRACT CALLED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A DUAL THREE-LANE CARRIAGEWAY AND AN ADJACENT DISTRIBUTOR ROAD.

+ THE ALIGNMENT OF THE BYPASS WILL FOLLOW THE EXISTING TAI PO ROAD FROM THE NORTHERN END AS FAR AS THE INTERSECTION NORTH OF FANLING VILLAGE. FROM THERE IT IS LOCATED ALONGSIDE THE KOWLOON-CANTON RAILWAY, + MR GARRETT SAID.

+A SEPARATE FOOTPATH AND CYCLEWAY WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE MAIN CARRIAGEWAY, HE ADDED.

FILL MATERIAL FOR THE WORKS, EXPECTED TO START SHORTLY AND BE COMPLETED BY MID-1985, WOULD BE BROUGHT IN FROM THE SHA LING BORROW AREA. HOWEVER, RESTRICTIONS ON HAULAGE TIMES ARE INCLUDED IN THE CONTRACT IN ORDER TO REDUCE TRAFFIC CONGESTION.

+TOGETHER WITH THE OTHER SECTIONS OF THE NEW TERRITORIES CIRCULAR ROUTE IN THE EAST, INCLUDING THE TAI PO/SHA TIN COASTAL ROAD AND THE TAI PO BYPASS, THE FANLING EYPASS WILL BECOME A PRINCIPAL ROAD LINK BETWEEN THE NORTHEASTERN PART OF THE NEW TERRITORIES AND THE KOWLOON URBAN AREAS, MR GARRETT SAID.
