PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF THE
1980 SURVEY OF TRANSPORT ESTABLISHMENTS

THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT CONDUCTED IN 1981
A SAMPLE SURVEY OF 8 000 TRANSPORT ESTABLISHMENTS TO COLLECT DATA RELATING TO THE YEAR 1980. THE PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF THIS FIRST STATISTICAL ENQUIRY FOR THE SECTOR ARE NOW AVAILABLE.
ACCORDING TO THE PROVISIONAL SURVEY RESULTS, THERE WERE ABOUT 26 200 TRANSPORT ESTABLISHMENTS IN 1980 WITH 110 784 PERSONS ENGAGED, OF WHOM 83 928 WERE EMPLOYEES AND THE REST WERE WORKING PROPRIETORS, WORKING PARTNERS OR UNPAID FAMILY WORKERS. THE TOTAL BUSINESS RECEIPTS OF THESE ESTABLISHMENTS WERE ESTIMATED TO BE $22 246 MILLION DURING 1980, WITH $3 069 MILLION SPENT ON COMPENSATION OF EMPLOYEES AND $16 961 MILLION ON OTHER OPERATING EXPENSES. THEIR GROSS ADDITIONS TO FIXED ASSETS, WHICH EQUAL THE ACQUISITION OF FIXED ASSETS LESS PROCEEDS FROM RE-SALES OF FIXED ASSETS, WERE ESTIMATED TO BE $5 377 MILLION.
THE ATTACHED TABLE PRESENTS THE PROVISIONAL RESULTS FOR THE 26 200 TRANSPORT ESTABLISHMENTS WHICH WERE DISTINGUISHED
INTO 28 TRANSPORT GROUPS UNDER EIGHT MAJOR GROUPS, NAMELY, LAND PASSENGER TRANSPORT, LAND FREIGHT TRANSPORT, SUPPORTING SERVICES TO LAND TRANSPORT, OCEAN AND COASTAL WATER TRANSPORT, INLAND WATER TRANSPORT, SUPPORTING SERVICES TO WATER TRANSPORT, AIR TRANSPORT, AND SERVICES INCIDENTAL TO TRANSPORT.
AMONG THE 28 TRANSPORT GROUPS, LAND FREIGHT TRANSPORT BY TRUCK+, WITH 10 275 ESTABLISHMENTS ENGAGING 20 085 PERSONS REPRESENTING 39 PER CENT AND 18 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY OF THE TOTALS FOR THE ENTIRE TRANSPORT SECTOR, WAS MOST IMPORTANT IN TERMS OF THE NUMBER OF ESTABLISHMENTS AS WELL AS PERSONS ENGAGED. IT WAS FOLLOWED BY URBAN TAXIS+, WITH 6 849 ESTABLISHMENTS AND 16 646 PERSONS. +TRAMWAYS, THE MASS TRANSIT RAILWAY AND PUBLIC BUSES+, WITH ONLY SIX ESTABLISHMENTS, ENGAGED 15 742 PERSONS OR 14 PER CENT OF THE TOTAL. +PUBLIC LIGHT BUSES+, WITH 3 951 ESTABLISHMENTS, RANKED THIRD AMONG THE TRANSPORT GROUPS IN TERMS OF THE NUMBER OF ESTABLISHMENTS BUT ENGAGED ONLY 4 606 PERSONS. THIS WAS BECAUSE MANY PUBLIC LIGHT BUS OWNERS RENTED THEIR VEHICLES TO NON-OWNER OPERATORS WHO WERE EXCLUDED FROM THE SURVEY. (FOR TAXIS AND PUBLIC LIGHT BUSES IN LAND PASSENGER TRANSPORT, THE SURVEY COVERED VEHICLE OWNERS ONLY. NON-OWNER OPERATORS OF TAXIS AND PUBLIC LIGHT BUSES WERE EXCLUDED FROM THE SURVEY BECAUSE A SAMPLING FRAME FOR SUCH OPERATORS DID NOT EXIST.) OTHER GROUPS WITH A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED WERE AIR TRANSPORT+, +TRAVEL AGENTS AND AIRLINE TICKET AGENTS+, +SHIP AGENTS AND MANAGERS+ AND SHIPOWNERS OF SEA-GOING VESSELS AND CONTAINER TERMINALS+.
WHILE THE WHOLE TRANSPORT SECTOR INCURRED, ON AVERAGE, $37 000 ON COMPENSATION PER EMPLOYEE PER ANNUM, BROKERS IN SHIP PURCHASING/SELLING OR SHIP CHARTERING+ AND +AIR TRANSPORT+ HAD THE HIGHEST COMPENSATION PER EMPLOYEE, AT $88 000 AND $80 000 PER ANNUM RESPECTIVELY, +SCHOOL HIRED CAR SERVICE+ HAD THE LOWEST COMPENSATION PER EMPLOYEE, AT $13 000 PER ANNUM.
