ROAD DESIGN CONTRACT SIGNED

AN AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BETWEEN THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT AND A FIRM REPRESENTING A JOINT VENTURE OF CONSULTING ENGINEERS, TO INVESTIGATE, DESIGN AND SUPERVISE CONSTRUCTION OF A DUAL THREE-LANE TRUNK ROAD FROM AU TAU TO FAN KAM ROAD IN THE NEW TERRITORIES.

THE PROJECT IS PART OF A SCHEME TO IMPROVE THE NEW TERRITORIES CIRCULAR ROUTE.

THE PRINCIPAL GOVERNMENT HIGHWAY ENGINEER, MR HAROLD BEATON, SIGNED THE AGREEMENT WITH MR TONY VAIL OF BINNIE AND PARTNERS (HONG KONG), REPRESENTING THE JOINT VENTURE, MR M.M. RICH OF WILBUR SMITH AND ASSOCIATES, AND MR W.G. HETHERINGTON OF HARRIS AND SUTHERLAND (FAR EAST).

MR BEATON SAID THAT EXISTING DEVELOPMENTS AT YUEN LONG, FAIRVIEW PARK AND FANLING HAD ALREADY GENERATED SIGNIFICANT VOLUMES OF TRAFFIC ON THE SECTION OF CASTLE PEAK ROAD FROM AU TAU TO FANLING.

AS THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS BEING PLANNED FOR MAI PO, SAN TIN AND KWU TUNG PROGRESSED. THE CAPACITY OF CASTLE PEAK ROAD WOULD NEED TO BE IMPROVED TO ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASED TRAFFIC FLOW.

THE NEW ROAD, WHICH WILL GENERALLY FOLLOW THE ROUTE OF THE EXISTING CASTLE PEAK ROAD, WILL BE ABOUT 12.5 KILOMETRES LONG. IT WILL HAVE GRADE-SEPARATED INTERCHANGES AT AU TAU, FAIRVIEW PARK AND SAN TIN.

THE ROAD WILL HAVE TWO THREE-LANE CARRIAGEWAYS, WITH SERVICE ROADS, CYCLE TRACKS, FOOTWAYS AND GRADE-SEPARATED CROSSINGS FOR PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS AT STRATEGIC LOCATIONS.

THE NEW ROAD IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF 1984.
