Mr. John Hugh PAIN

Mr. Pain was appointed Assistant Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourist Association in 1964 and Executive Director in 1971. During his term of office the tourist

industry has developed enormously from 900,000 in 1971 to over two million and expenditure by visitors is now estimated at over $6,000 million per annum. Mr. Pain is both effective and popular in the industry in Hong Kong and in the region, and the growth of tourism is directly attributable to his constant

effort and enthusiasm.

The Honourable John Morrison RIDDELL-SWAN, JP

Mr. Riddell-Swan joined the Government as a Veterinary Officer in 1956. He was appointed Assistant Director of Agriculture and Fisheries (Agriculture) in 1964 and Deputy Director in 1971. He became Director in 1980. The Department encourages optimum land usage, manages large areas of open countryside and is responsible for soil and water conservation: additionally it provides technical, development and advisory services to the farming and fishing industries. Hong Kong's primary producers and fishing fleets still supply a significant part of the territorial demand for poultry, eggs, pork, vegetables and fish. The Department also mounted the major anti-rabies operation in 1980.

Mr. Cha started his career as a reporter on the Ta

He was later Kung Pao in China at the end of World War II.

He remained until transferred to Hong Kong as a translator. late 1958 when he left to start his own newspaper, Ming Pao Daily News. Over the years, through his hard work, he has contributed greatly not only to the development of his group of publications but also to journalism in Hong Kong as a whole. His penetrating and impartial comments on local and overseas issues have won him high respect and praise from the local public. Mr. Cha is also well known as an author of "swordplay" novels under the pen-name of Kam Yung. Many of his novels have been made into films and serialised television programmes.
