SPEECH BY H.E. THE GOVERNOR, SIR MURRAY MACLEHOSE, KBE, KCMG, KCVO, AT THE OPENING OF THE QUEEN ELIZABETH STADIUM ON AUGUST 27, 1980
It gives me great pleasure to be here to declare open this fine
new building. It is the latest addition to our growing array of outdoor and
indoor facilities where sport, recreation and culture are practised and enjoyed
to an ever increasing extent.
It is the finest yet, with seating for 3 600 and a versatility
that spans all the way from full-scale exhibitions, ballet and opera, to
basketball and ping pong.
It also provides a home for the Amateur Sports Federation and
Olympic Committee, 23 local governing sports bodies and a central secretariat
a veritable power-house of sport.
I congratulate the Public Works Department and the architects
and contractors and all others who have helped to concentrate so much into
this building that will contribute to the lighter side of life in Hong Kong,
and done so with such pleasing taste.
