DRAGON BOAT DINNER IN LONDON
The Hong Kong Association held a "Dragon Boat" dinner at the
Dorchester Hotel, London, on Tuesday (June 17).
The Rt Hon John Nott, Secretary of State for Trade, was the guest
of honour and spoke at the dinner. Another speaker was Sir Yuet-keung Kan,
Chairman of the Trade Development Council.
The following is the full text of Mr Nott's speech:
"One of the more obvious perks of being Trade Secretary rather
than, say, one of the Home Economic Ministers in this country is that the
job regularly takes you away from wrestling with the intractable problems
of our domestic economy to undertake a programme of visits overseas,
"This is not always as well understood as it might be. Trudging
out of the Commons after an all-night sitting into a bitter winter dawn and
letting slip to an embattled ministerial colleague that the next day I am
off on a visit to Greece, or California, or Hong Kong, I have known the response
of even normally mild-mannered men to be quite unsuitable for repetition
in polite company.
