"And I was frightened.
5.
"In the morning it was still raining but it was hot and smelt
and I thought I would choke ... and I pushed my way up the stairs ...
and it was misty and we couldn't see
and there were no other boats ... and I kept on looking
trying not to tread on people
the land and
for my parents
pushing my way along the deck and up and downstairs...
calling out for them ... and I couldn't find them I went back to my
brother and then searched again for my mother ... and she wasn't there."
Subsequently the girl and her brother were reunited with their
family two weeks later. Her mother and father had boarded another amall
boat, and reached Hong Kong about six days after their children.
In the circumstances, I suppose they were lucky: we are told
that the chances of survival of those who leave Vietnam are slim: one
half perish on the high seas,
in two
"SOLA NOBILITAS VIRTUS": I have the conviction that it can
also be "translated" as "DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD BE DONE BY". I
would like to think that that embraces the hall-mark of the true
Maryknoller.
Reverend Sister I am sure that all your students will do their
very best always to keep that aim in front of them throughout their
lives.
In the same way as throughout the life of this school the
Maryknoll sisters have dedicated their lives and given of their qualities
and professional talents in order to produce the sort of Maryknoll girl
who is not only a credit to the school but also very much a credit to
Hong Kong.
Thank you.
